First of all, I’d like to congrats you on picking Muay Thai as your martial art. The choice of a fighting style that offers so many different strikes is a huge decision. But have you ever wondered which Muay Thai outfit suits you in the training session?
There are many obstacles en route to success and victory, and the choice of perfect training clothes is just one of them. Luckily, the rules are not strict, and you can choose between a few options. Please read on to discover the most suitable Muay Thai outfit for you!
Table of Contents
Outfit For Men

If you’re male, you must compete topless. In Thailand, you’ll probably only wear Muay Thai shorts as humidity and temperature are mostly high due to the hot climax. You can train without a T-shirt as long as you feel fine.
Yet, training in colder surround requires at least wearing a sports tee. A normal T-shirt is fine, but I recommend one size above because a too-tight Muay Thai outfit limits your kicks. If your size is L, please put XL on.
Also, the dressing code in states outside of Thailand mostly demands wearing a T-shirt, so believe me, attracting unwanted attention is not an option.
Muay Thai Outfit For Women

Females don’t fight topless, so they can choose between a sports bra, sports tee, or a singlet as a top.
The sports bra is excellent because there won’t be hand movement restrictions, while you should be warned about the other two choices. One size up should let your arms swing wildly and defend against all kinds of attacks.
Muay Thai Shorts – Which Is Your Perfect Choice?
For me, any shorts that don’t limit your kicks and knees should be fine (of course, I’d always recommend branded Muay Thai pair, but it costs).
Yet, the first pick is definitively going to be a very flexible pair with wide leg openings. But you might need a solid pair of underwear or boxers if you follow this piece of advice. If you don’t like to show your body too much, then try a pair without leg openings, you’ll probably be pleased.
You can combine colors, for example, yellow shorts get along with dark boxers, etc. The same color will work, but generally, white and black color run with almost every color in the world.

Shy people might be keen on wearing compression shorts under Thai shorts (especially girls, a lot of eyes could be pointed at their groins during high kicks).
Compression shorts (I recommend spandex) are a popular pick, but they mustn’t be too tight because kicking potential will be endangered.
Note: if you’re taking part in a boxing/elbowing class, please ignore the previous sentence.
Are you a kicker or a puncher? Clinch striker, elbow, or knee specialist? Answer these questions and you’ll discover your perfect lower body Muay Thai outfit in the split of a second.
Injury-Prevention Outfit
Would you like to train Muay Thai every day? Fine, you’ll need a pair of gloves and hand wraps in the first place. You’ll learn technique in the first few training sessions, but as you advance, the coach will insist on hitting the heavy bag and focusing mitts. Bare-knuckle striking is not an option.
- Support your wrists and knuckles with the Fairtex Handwraps
- Made with high-quality cotton and elastic for comfort and flexibility
- Velcro closure allows for a secure fit
- Suitable for a variety of combat sports, including boxing, Muay Thai, and kickboxing
- Available in multiple colors to match your style

I recommend you purchase a pair of gloves and hand wraps and wash them regularly. The majority of gyms will allow you to use their gloves, but most of them stink and the padding is too thin. You won’t feel comfortable.
- Mesh panel under fist for great thermal regulation
- Triple Density foam
- 100% full attached thumb
- Large Velcro enclosure
- Handmade in Thailand

If you advance, you’ll start sparring with your teammates. Conditional sparring is light and quick, no additional equipment is needed. Yet, potential competitors should purchase shin guards to prevent injuries. I kindly advise you to buy a pair, even if you kicked off late.
Optional Outfit
Some pieces of Muay Thai outfits are not “mandatory”, but I consider them “important”. More equipment means more training options. Don’t forget, everybody has a different way to view the world.
Ankle Pads + Knee Pads
Ankle pads will keep your ankles warm throughout the training session. This sounds like a great pick for somebody who faced joint issues in the past. It’s allowed in the competition too. This piece of equipment protects you during rotations and side steps, but it could affect your footwork negatively, too.
- Made in Thailand
- Fabric is a poly/cotton blend.
- Free size
- Color: Black/Red trim

Knee pads are going to keep you protected during hard sparring sessions. Good knee support sounds like a great choice for beginners with poor technique or for a fighter who recovers after ACL surgery.
- Ultra-lightweight fabric
- Cushioning and reinforced padding for better protection
- Ventilated strategic area delivering better heat management
- Ships as a pair

I think both ankle and knee pads are a great long-time investment because injuries are common in Muay Thai.
Rash Guards
You’ll see rash guards very often when you visit an MMA gym that offers Muay Thai classes. You’ll feel dry and comfortable during the training session, plus it reduces muscle injuries.
- Compression technology improves blood circulation to the muscles and speeds up recovery time
- Fitted cut leaving no Outlet to your opponent
- Reinforced seams
- Rubber waist band for keeping your rashguard in place for perfect coverage

But rash guards are an optional piece of Muay Thai outfit for a good reason – they are mostly tight and you might have to deal with kicking limitations. You won’t see it in Thailand, but any western-world MMA/Thai boxing gym allows rash guards in the training session.
Shoes
You must train barefooted in many dojos, but competitors will sometimes go for a run, especially when preparing for the competition. In Thailand, coaches sometimes force their students to run bare-footed, but the western world is different.
A pair of running shoes might come in handy for rope jumping or light jogging sessions within the gym compound too. Just keep your shoes in your backpack, especially if you’re a competitor – you never know.
Windbreaker
If you cut weight in cold states like Canada or Russia, this piece of training equipment will come in handy. It improves sweating and copycats the sauna effect.
Conclusion
There are many different people all around the globe, and I hope my tutorial will help you discover the most suitable Muay Thai outfit for your classes.
Do you want to train professionally? Are you shy or open-minded? Do you train in Thailand or not? Are you a clinching expert, long-range striker, or combo specialist? Answer these questions and you’ll discover the perfect clothes for your Muay Thai classes.
