What are The Different Types of Heavy Bags?

The term ‘heavy bag’ is actually a broad one. It refers to just a particular type or brand of training equipment. Yes, it goes beyond that. It refers to many different styles of the bag.

There are many types of Muay Thai heavy bags, and each of them is designed for specific functions. Some are for kicking, while the others are specifically for punching. They all have different purposes and areas of expertise. So, let us compare them based on their names and styles.

The Traditional Heavy Bag

This type of heavy bag is everyone’s favorite bag. Why? This is simply because it is an all-rounder. It can be used for comprehensive Muay Thai training. It is excellent for all aspects of Muay Thai techniques.

For punching and kicking, this bag is suitable for all that. It is also suited for beginners, intermediates, and advanced Muay Thai practitioners. This is the best of the Muay Thai heavy bags as it allows for full-body training, unlike the others.

It weighs about 70 to 150 pounds and is usually about 5 to 6 feet long. This ranges according to the usage. There are lighter versions of this bag that are recommended for beginners while the heavier ones are for advanced practitioners.

The lighter ones are great for practicing swing movement, so beginners are meant to start with this. I always recommend this heavy bag for all-around training in Muay Thai and MMA with all these features.

Positives
  • Excellent for full-body strength training.
  • Great swing that helps improve movements.
  • The length is suitable for punching and low kicks also.
  • All-rounder for various technique training.
Negatives
  • Not so suitable for uppercut workout.

The Banana (long) Heavy Bag

This bag is rarely used in sports other than Muay Thai. Of all the other Muay Thai heavy bags, it is the most useful in Muay Thai technique training. This bag is about 6 feet long, half the width, and weighs a bit more than the traditional heavy bag.

This bag is specifically designed to let trainers work on the low kick techniques. They are also filled with hard materials, which help strengthen and condition the shins. Although this bag is usually associated with Muay Thai, it is rarely so at standard gyms in Thailand.

Besides being useful for low kicks, the regular heavy bag can still serve its purpose. And if there were to be 12 heavy bags in a gym in Thailand, ten would be the traditional ones as they are all-rounder.

Positives
  • Excellent for low kicks.
  • Great for training in Teeps and clinching knees.
  • Very efficient in Muay Thai techniques.
  • Suitable for the drilling combination of kicks and punches.
Negatives
  • Not suitable for punching strengths.
  • Little swing, so it doesn’t improve movement.
  • Not suitable for body kicks because of its too narrow nature.
  • It gets too hard at the bottom of the bag.

The Wrecking Ball Training Bag

This particular heavy bag is designed explicitly with pinching and boxing in mind. They come in various shapes and sizes, all fitted for uppercut punch workouts. They can either be tear-shaped or circular at the bottom, which faces straight to the eye.

In Muay Thai gyms, you would hardly come across this type of heavy bag as it doesn’t serve many purposes. Although it isn’t rampant in traditional gyms, at least one is recommended in gyms to improve the punch and uppercut techniques.

Positives
  • An ideal bag for uppercuts.
  • Suitable for elbow strengthening.
  • Useful for punching combinations.
  • Relatively inexpensive to purchase.
Negatives
  • Not an ideal bag for kicking and shin strengthening.

Teardrop (knee) Heavy Bag

All other Muay Thai heavy bags come in generic shapes. But the tear-shaped heavy load comes in a unique form that lets the trainer throw punches and strikes at different angles of the bag. It is often referred to as a knee bag because its unique shape enables you to knee the bag easily.

Apart from kneeing, it also allows for uppercuts and hooks technique training at different angles of the bag. It is easily movable and fits a series of training necessities. Although it may not be ideal for low kicking, it is still one of the best bags used in Muay Thai training.

Positives
  • Easily movable.
  • Very inexpensive.
  • Ideal for knee strengthening.
  • Great bag for uppercuts and hooks combos.
Negatives
  • Less swing motion.
  • Not ideal for kicking.

The Angled Heavy Bag

Angled Muay Thai heavy bags comprise a combination of tear-shaped and banana heavy bags. The pack will be between 4 to 6 feet long, depending on the brand it is. Due to the size and thickness of the bag, it offers very little swing motion. It also allows for an uppercut and hook training but doesn’t allow for footwork and movements.

If you need an additional heavy bag to put in your gym, this could be a good option as it serves the purpose of two types of Muay Thai heavy bags.

Positives
  • It allows for the body and uppercut shots.
  • Great combination heavy bag.
Negatives
  • Little swing, which isn’t ideal for footwork and motion training.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Muay Thai Training Bag

Aside from knowing the types of Muay Thai heavy bags, it would be best to consider these when choosing the right one for you.

The Type Of Material

Heavy bags are mostly made of leather (genuine or synthetic), vinyl, or plastic. The choice of material will influence the durability, comfort, and stiffness of the bag.

The most durable bags are made from genuine leather, so I strongly recommend that you choose this. After that follows synthetic leather, vinyl, and plastic, this choice will also affect the bag’s price.

The Fillings

Heavy bags can be filled with water, fabric, sand, foam, or gel. Whatever the bag is filled up with affects the weight, stiffness, and swing of the bag. Therefore, to determine the longevity and strength, weigh the options, and find that which you see fit.

Those are the most important features to consider when choosing a heavy bag. Others include the hangings, price, brand, and style. Now let’s go to the top three recommendations.

After much research and review, I have come up with the three best Muay Thai heavy bags you can trust. I will make it brief and precise so you can get a glimpse of their exceptional qualities quickly.

The Fairtex brand is one of the most trusted names in the Muay Thai industry. For any dedicated practitioner, I believe this banana bag is one of the best you can get. It is a perfect bag for clinching, punching, kicking, and footwork training.

Made from excellent faux leather material, it is one of the most durable bags on the market. I love how it comes in different colors to pick from. With two versions (filled and unfilled) of the bag, you can choose one that suits your preference and get a cut on the shipping fees.

3. Ringside 100-pound Muay Thai Punching Bag

This is a substantial strengthening bag. It is ideal for practicing Muay Thai low kicks and punches. It is also made of synthetic leather, just like the Fairtex brand. It weighs 100 pounds, which makes it suitable for residential and commercial usage.

I love how smooth and soft the material feels to the hand upon attack and punching. This means you can attack this bag barehanded. How easy! For efficient training in various aspects of Muay Thai training, this is a bag I would recommend to any practitioner, either beginner or advanced.
